Google's 9x Speed Claim Assumes Your Documents Are Correct. Are They?

Google's Gemini Workspace synthesizes documents 9x faster. That's what everyone covered. Here's the angle they missed.

On March 10, Google released Gemini Embedding 2 — its first embedding model to map text, images, video, audio, and PDFs into a single unified vector space. A day later, Google announced that Gemini Workspace would now synthesize across Drive, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Chat to generate finished documents from a single prompt. Their own study found it completes 100-cell data tasks 9x faster than manual entry. Coverage was uniformly positive. The era of hunting through tabs and folders was declared over.

Nobody asked what happens when the documents being synthesized are wrong.

Speed multiplies errors just as well as it multiplies correct answers

An employee prompts: "Draft a client proposal using our pricing guide and product specs." The pricing guide is eight months out of date. The product name changed in Q3.

Gemini returns a polished, professionally formatted proposal — outdated numbers, old product name, confident presentation — 9x faster than a human would have produced the same mistake. The error didn't get worse. It got faster, cleaner, and harder to catch before it reached a client.

This is the part of Google's announcement that nobody wrote about.

What "Help Me Create" actually pulls from

The new Workspace feature builds documents by pulling from Drive, Gmail, and Chat simultaneously. Google's own example: "Draft a newsletter using the meeting minutes from my January HOA meeting and the list of upcoming events." In practice, enterprise usage looks more like: "Create a proposal for this prospect using our product specs, pricing sheet, and the notes from the discovery call."

Think about what actually lives in a typical organization's Drive. Pricing sheets from three contract cycles. Meeting notes from before and after a product pivot. An all-hands transcript from when the company was still called something different. Security policy docs nobody formally retired when the policy changed. All of it eligible to surface in a synthesized output. All of it treated as equally current.

Gemini Embedding 2 captures semantic relationships between documents. It doesn't evaluate whether those documents should still be trusted. A contradictory policy document embeds as a policy document. An outdated spec sheet embeds as a spec sheet. The model has no mechanism to distinguish current from superseded — and the employee receiving the polished output has no visibility into which sources fed it.

The embedding layer and the accuracy layer are two different things. Google built a better embedding layer. The accuracy layer still falls on the organization.

The numbers behind the assumption

This isn't speculation about edge cases. According to DataHub's 2026 State of Context Management report, 66% of enterprises are already receiving biased or misleading AI outputs. 61% have delayed AI deployment specifically because they don't trust their underlying data. Those numbers predate Gemini Workspace's expansion. They describe the document environment that Gemini will now synthesize across at 9x speed.

There's a pattern here worth naming. When AI systems give customers wrong answers, the cause is rarely a model failure. It's a knowledge failure. The model synthesized what it was given. What it was given was wrong. Workspace adds synthesis speed to that dynamic without touching the underlying condition.

This isn't a Google problem

Gemini Embedding 2 is technically solid work. Mapping five modalities into a single semantic space is a hard problem, and the 70% latency reduction Google reports for some enterprise customers is a real improvement. The Workspace integration will save time for organizations with well-maintained document libraries.

That last phrase is doing a lot of work.

The problem isn't what Google built. It's what they're assuming already exists: a version-controlled, contradiction-free document corpus with a clear line between current and superseded content. Most organizations don't have that. They have years of accumulated files, no formal deprecation process, and no system for flagging when a document stops being reliable.

The enterprise AI readiness gap is a knowledge layer problem, not a model capability problem. More capable models don't fix ungoverned documents. They move through them faster.

What the fix actually looks like

The document quality problem doesn't shrink when AI gets better access to documents. It gets more surface area.

Organizations that want the productivity gains from Gemini Workspace need to fix the foundation first. That means contradiction detection across documents, a process for retiring superseded content, and a way to update knowledge in real time when policies change.
